Breathe with Ease Neti Pots are handmade lightweight ceramic vessels and ergonomically designed for cleansing the nostrils and sinus cavities.
After using the pot one feels relaxed for the whole day and may experience an improved sense of smell. The eyes feel clearer or "brighter".
It feels great, the flow of warm water through the nostrils, massaging and clearing away toxins etc. When you have come out of the ocean from a swim you notice how easily the breath flows. The effect from practicing Neti is the same.
Neti pots and the practice of nasal cleansing have been part of our wellbeing ritual for thousands of years.
Nasal Cleansing is an ancient personal hygiene practice, originating from the Yoga practice of Jala Neti (literally: "water cleansing"), which involves regularly flooding of the nasal cavity with warm salty water. Nasal irrigation is commonly practiced throughout the world.
In todays environment of computers, airconditioning and allergies etc., this practice is beneficial for all of us even if we do not suffer from a sinus condition.
- Good for people working in air conditioned environments as it can help ease dry and crusty nasal passage.
- Improvement of breathing.
- Strengthens vision and relieves tired eyes (eg after working long periods on computer).
- Clears the tear channels.
- Improved sense of smell and taste.
- Positive influence on all sense organs in the head.
- Can relieve headaches.
Peter Hoyle, designer of the neti pot has a background in ceramics and he is a Yoga Instructor and has been practising "Jala Neti" (water cleansing) for many years and facilitates nasal irrigation workshops. He created this pot keeping in mind the pots function and especially the need for it to feel comfortable in the hand, with a thumb indentation (for easy grip) and tapered cone shape spout that plugs snugly into the nostril.
Here is a basic guideline but one may need to modify the technique as one needs to:
1. Pour 1 litre of warm salty water into a container. Ideally use pure sea salt and filtered water.
2. The temperature of the water should be 38-40 degrees C, with about 1 teaspoon of salt per 1 litre of water. Then fill your Neti Pot approximately 250ml water. Aim to pour 500ml water through each nostril although 250ml may be sufficient at the beginning of your practice.
3. Bend your head over a wash basin and gently insert the spout of the Neti Pot into the right nostril (which as a result closes it ). Bend the head slightly forward and at the same time tilt the head to the left so that the water will flow out of the left nostril.
4. The water may take some time to flow through the nostril. This is natural as the cleansing process is taking place. Breathe naturally through your opened mouth. When all water has passed through excess water is expelled through the nostril and then the process begins through the left nostril.
5. To maintain your Neti Pot between use simply rinse with hot water stand pot upside down to drain and hand dry with cloth and it will last for ever!
More details are provided with the pot and brochure.
I attended a recent Neti demonstration and used the Breathe with Ease neti pot. It is so simple to use and I now practice it every morning and I have found it has made an enormous difference to my clarity of thought and focus. My general wellbeing has also improved and importantly the flu or common cold is a thing of the past. I would recommend that you just give it a go and observe the benefits that you will gain from regular use.
